The project forms part of the Kent County Council’s Modernisation Programme, following a Government initiative to replace temporary accommodation in schools, with permanent buildings.

The scheme comprises the development of a new Dining Hall and Kitchen facilities, along with a Resource Room, Family Liaison Office, Toilets, Care Suite and covered link through to the existing schools buildings. The initial excavation is to take place under an Archaeological Watching Brief, due to it being on the site of an old air raid shelter. Construction comprises trench fill and pad concrete foundations, reinforced concrete floor, steel frame, rendered block cavity wall and timber weatherboard / block external walls, block and stud internal partitions, metal pitched roof and in-situ concrete flat roof, composite aluminium / timber external doors and windows, together with floor, wall and ceiling finishes, mechanical and electrical installations, new kitchen appliances and internal and underground drainage. On completion of the new building, the existing kitchen and dining facilities located in the HORSA hut, will be demolished and the land prepared and given back to the school as playing fields.

The Woodley Coles LLP was appointed after the feasibility stage, to check and update the budget estimate, prepare the contract documentation, evaluate and report on the tenders received and complete the post contract cost control services.
