Project: New Link Block at St. Mary’s C. of E. Primary School, Folkestone, Kent
Client: The Diocesan Board of Education, Canterbury
Role: Quantity Surveyor
Sector: Education
Contract: Standard Building Contract with Quantities incorporating Revision 2 2009
The requirement for further teaching accommodation and improved access between the existing separate, but adjacent, Junior and Primary units at St. Mary’s School, has resulted in the design of a new Link Block between the two facilities.
Removal of an existing access bridge and the diversion of underground services, obstructing the construction, have been removed under an enabling works contract.
The confined nature of the narrow site, with access from one end only and a level differential of 2m between the two existing buildings, has presented a logistical challenge to the Contractor.
The new Link block is of traditional construction in sympathy with the existing school buildings, circa 1980. The considerable difference in floor levels, between the existing Junior and Infant buildings, have dictated a semi-basement ground floor construction to the new Link Block and the structure comprises trench fill foundations, beam and block suspended ground floor, masonry cavity walls and concrete retaining walls; precast concrete plank upper floors and timber roof construction with fibre-cement slating.
The Woodley Coles LLP are providing a full quantity surveying service on this project from budget estimate to agreement of the final accounts for the both the enabling works and remodelling contracts
